Now that your seeds have arrived you may wonder which varieties are best suited for directly sowing into your garden outdoors, and which ones do best when planted early inside then later transplanted outside.
The rule of thumb goes, any variety that is a "cold-hardy" plant or root crop, can do well when planted directly into the soil outside. These include things like carrots, parsnips, garlic, asparagus and artichokes. The crops that do best when direct sown are more prone to root damage if transplanted which is why it is best to start them directly in the place where they will live out their entire plant life.
More tender varieties or heat loving crops such as tomatoes, peppers, rosemary, and eggplant do best when you start them indoors and then transplant them outside when temperatures are warm enough and the soil can be worked. The best part about this method is you are able to get a jump start on the gardening season by starting your seeds several weeks before the last average frost date in your area.
